People in Sunderland who are under 65 and are eligible for a flu vaccine due to being at increased risk from the effects of flu can now get their free vaccination on an evening or weekend.

Many people who are under 65 and have certain medical conditions that class them as ‘at risk’ may be finding it hard to get their flu vaccination during normal GP or pharmacy hours. But now, extra flu vaccination sessions have been made available through Sunderland’s GP Extended Access Service, so they can make an appointment at a time more convenient for them by simply phoning a new dedicated number 07935 005340.

Dr Fadi Khalil, GP at Broadway Medical Practice and Clinical Vice Chair for Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “If you are under 65 and have certain medical conditions will mean that the flu can be very serious and may even kill. We want to ensure that there is no reason that someone who really needs the flu jab cannot get it. That is why it we have made extra flu vaccination sessions available through Sunderland’s Extended Access Service.

“If you are eligible for a free flu vaccination and it is hard for you to find the time to get this during normal GP practice hours, make an appointment to get your jab through Sunderland’s Extended Access Service by phoning 07935 005340.”

The flu vaccination is free for people who are at increased risk from the effects of flu. The vaccine is safe and doesn’t give you flu.

Sunderland’s GP Extended Access Service runs throughout the year and extends the capacity of the local GPs by offering appointments in the evening, at weekends and of bank holidays.  Appointments are based at Bunnyhill Primary Care Centre, Riverview Primary Care Centre and Washington Primary care Centre.
